GLOSSARY__________________________________
Bass
Wood Preferred type
of wood for wood blinds because it's lightweight and
produces a finer grain.
Bottom rail The bottom
slat of the blind.
Breakaway Tassel Designed
for child and pet safety.
Bull-Nose Casing A type
of window trim where all the edges are rounded.
Butt & Pass The condition
occurring between two window coverings that meet in a corner.
One blind runs up to the wall with the other blind meeting
in front, resulting gap is half the width of the slat size.
Carrier The individual
louver holder that slides back and forth in the headrail.
Cellular Also referred
as "honeycomb", this type of shade has two or
more sheets of fabric combined to form chambers within the
layers. Provides great insulation.
Clearance A unit of measure
reserved between a window product and the window or floor
itself. This allows for unobstructed operation.
Cloth Tape Wide cotton
tapes, available in variety of colors and designs. This
upgrade replaces the standard ladder cord.
Cord Cleat A part on
which to wrap excess cord. Mounted on the wall or in the
window casing.
Cord Tassel Found at
the end of pull cords.
Composite A mixture of
materials combined into a particular material.
Continuous Cord Controls
the item you grab to operate the lifting, tilting, or traversing
of a blind; The cord is one continuous loop. A good alternative
instead dangling long cords.
Cord Tilt An alternative
to a wand tilter on horizontal blinds. Pull the cords to
open and close the slats. Provides smoother operation compared
to a wand tilter.
Cutout A corner or edge
is cut away from the shade or blind to allow for tile, baseboard,
or any minor obstruction.
Depth The distance from
the front edge back to any hanging obstruction within the
window .
Encasement The area in
which the window is placed.
Dye Lot Refers to color
variation between different manufacturing runs of fabric.
Factory Deduction The
size amount automatically taken off a shade or blind by
the factory when specified as an inside mount. This deduction
is made to ensure proper fit. The amount taken off will
vary depending on the type of shade.
Finials Decorative end
cap for drapery rods and poles.
Headrail Housing for
working mechanisms of a blind or shade.
Height Measurement from
top to bottom or vice versa.
Holdbacks An accessory
use to hold back drapery panels.
Hold-down Bracket Small
outside mount brackets use to hold down the shade or blind
in place. Most often used on doors.
Horizontal Blind A blind
with slats parallel to the floor and ceiling.
Insert Louvers A plastic
sleeve designed to hold vertical fabric louvers; fabric
in sleeve is hung as one unit; provides room darkening,
sun protection, and louver backing uniformity.
Inside Mount When this
term is specified on your order, factory will make automatic
deductions on the blind for proper fitting. Valances will
have no returns.
Ladder Cord The cording
supporting individual slats at proper spacing on horizontal
blinds.
Ladder Spacing The distance
between ladder cords.
Length The measure of
a wall, window, or blind that designates the distance from
top to bottom.
Louver Synonymous with
vane, slat, or blade. This term is usually used for vertical
blinds.
Outside Mount When this
is specified on your order, factory will make the blind
exactly to the ordered size.
One-way Draw Term used
for vertical blinds. Specifies that all vanes gather to
one side of the rail when opened. "one-way left"
designates vanes to stack to the left when open, "one-way
right" stacks to the right.
Opaque No light penetration
through the material.
Pleat The crease in pleated
and cellular fabric that ensures uniform folding.
Poles Metal or wood rods
for holding draperies.
Projection The distance
off the wall, coming into a room.
PVC Polyvinyl chloride.
R-factor Resistance factor.
Refers to the ability of a window covering to resist temperature
change.
Reverse Stack Term used
for vertical blinds. Vanes stacks to one end while controls
are located on the opposite end.
Rings Used for hanging
drapery panels on rods and poles.
Sandblasted Finish A
deep, textured finish on wood blinds done by spraying sand
on the materials. This finish creates a more apparent wood
grain look.
Scarf A piece of material
that hangs over the window usually pulled through scarf
holders. Generally acts as a soft valance treatment for
a nice finish.
Sconce A scarf or a rod
holder.
Semi-opaque Fabric or
material that allows light to penetrate through and at the
same time maintains privacy and sun protection.
Slat The individual strip
of material in the manufacture of horizontal blinds.
Spacer blocks Hollow
blocks of plastic used in place of projection brackets for
shades and horizontal window coverings. This is used to
clear small obstructions such as window moldings, door handles,
etc..
Split Stack Traversing
option for vertical blinds. Louvers open from the center
of the blind and stacks to both sides.
Stacking The amount of
space the blind occupies when raised or drawn.
Swatch Fabric or material
cuttings.
Tilt To open and close
louvers using the tilter mechanism.
Tilt Wand This mechanism
louvers or swivels slats and vanes. Used for vertical and
horizontal blinds.
Tilt Chain Used for vertical
blinds. This mechanism swivels or louvers the vanes.
Top Treatment A decorative
item that goes over windows and window coverings usually
as a finishing touch. Soft valances, swags, cornice boards
are among some of the most popular choices.
Top-down, bottom-up This
feature allows the shade to be lowered from the top or raised
from the bottom. Can be ordered as an upgrade for cellular
shades and pleated shades.
2 on 1-Headrail Two shades
or blinds share a common headrail for a cleaner look. Shades
are operated separately.
Valance A piece that
goes over the face of the headrail for a more finished look.
Valance Returns The sidepiece
of a valance when ordered as outside mount.
Vane Slat or louver material
used for vertical blinds.
Vertical Blind 3 ½"
vanes that hangs vertically and traverses left or right.
Warp Distort, bend, go
out of shape, damage
Width Measurement from
left to right or vice versa.
